We (Darren and José) will be using similar techniques to study both species in the same areas at the same time. So we decided to place the activities together on this blog. However the projects are different. Find out more about the peccary project here and the tapir here.

Second trip

14 days in Nucleo Caraguatatuba

14 dias no Núcleo Caraguatatuba

It is still early days but these early signs are not encouraging for white-lipped peccary in the region.

During this short stay I managed to record the presence of 10 mammal species in the Nucleo. But no sign of the presence of white-lipped peccaries.

The most striking result is that it is easier to detect the presence of jaguar and the woolly spider monkey than white-lipped peccaries.

The woolly spider monkey (Brachyteles arachnoides) is endangered and there are estimated to be less than 1500 left. Jaguars (Panthera onca) were intensively hunted and as top predators occur at naturally low densities. There are estimated to be less than 300 adult jaguar left in the coastal Atlantic forest of Sao Paulo state (i.e. the region that includes Nucleo Caraguatatuba).

Yet we saw and heard the woolly spider monkey and found jaguar sign (tracks and scrapes) in both Nucleo Caraguatatuba and Intervales state park. If there were “healthy” populations of peccaries we would expect to find more signs of their presence.
